TRAVELING THROUGH THE FALL SEASON OF NIKKO

Nikko is located in the northwestern part of Tochigi Prefecture, in the mountains north of Tokyo, best known for its therapeutic hot spring and rich nature as well as the the many famous historical shrines and temples. Below are some of the best healing sites you should visit in Nikko.

I visited the 97-meter high waterfall that lies in the city of Nikko. This impressive waterfall (one of the three highest waterfalls in Japan) can be seen close up via the use of an elevator on site (550 yen for junior high school students and above and 330 yen for elementary school students). Viewing the waterfall from below at the observation deck is just so therapeutic. Its mystic beauty can be seen throughout the year but I must say that it’s best in Autumn, amidst the changing color of the leaves.

華厳ノ滝 - 100M程の高さから一気に流れ落ちる光景は迫力満点で、眺めているだけでパワーをもらえる感じがする。エレベーターを使って行く有料の絶景スポットからは水しぶきがかかるほどの迫力ある滝を目の前で感じることができます！上から落ちてくる大量の水を眺めていると、言葉にはできない不思議な感覚になり、心もリフレッシュされる感じ。滝の反対側には紅葉している山がまるでペインティングのよう．．滝と紅葉を楽しめるのはもちろん、周辺にあるお土産屋さんで販売しているかりんとうまんじゅうを食べたりと、味覚でも楽しむことができるのでおすすめの場所です。最も色彩に溢れた華厳ノ滝を楽しむなら、11月の始めが見頃でパーフェクト✔️

HANGETSUYAMA OBSERVATORY

Visiting this place was unintentional but I’m glad we found it. It’s located somewhere on the mountain top. We had a different address entered in our car navigation system but somehow, miraculously ended up here. We were lucky to be able to witness the sun that was just about to set along with the mind blowing 360 degrees landscape .

半月山展望台

‍ここ、中禅寺湖を一望できる展望台「半月山展望台(はんげつやまてんぼうだい)」は行く予定ではなかったのに、偶然見つけた最高の穴場スポット。車で日光東照宮へ向かう為ナビに住所を入れたはずなのですが、不思議なことにこの場所に導かれたのです。きつねにつままれた気分でした！ちょうど日が沈むころに行ったので紅葉している山にオレンジ色の光が差し込み、展望台から見る景色はなんとも言えない素敵な光景でした。

TOSHOGU - SHRINE & TEMPLE

If you are someone who love to be touch with the spiritual side, Toshogu is the perfect place. This is the most renowned shrine (and Temple) of Nikko and is Japan’s leading world heritage where Ieyasu Tokugawa (great Shogun) is enshrined. Most of the complex is built in the 17th century with sumptuous carvings assembled within the premises.One of the carvings you do not want to miss is the symbol of peace “Sleeping Cat”, and the “Three Monkeys” with the “see no evil, hear no evil and speak no evil” poses!

日光東照宮 - 言わずと知れた有名スポット、世界文化遺産にも指定され徳川家康を祀っている「日光東照宮」。鳥居をくぐると、まず左手に現れるのが東照宮の三猿。右から「見ざる、言わざる、聞かざる」の順で並んでいます。因みに英語では、THREE WISE MONKEY（三匹の賢い猿）といい、「SEE NO EVIL, HEAR NO EVIL, SPEAK NO EVIL」と表現されています。国の重要文化財に指定されている本地堂（薬師堂）。神社の中にお寺があるのは珍しく、薬師寺が東照宮の中にあるのは徳永家康が薬師如来を深く信仰していた為と言われています。眠り猫がオブジェがいる奥宮まで続く坂下門をくぐると、杉林が広がる光景が。
杉やひのきの香りがやさしく広がり、心を落ちつかせてくれます。その先には奥宮まで続いている167段の階段。どこか懐かしい気分に．．階段を登りきると、御宝塔（徳川家康の墓）に辿り着きます。御宝塔の周りを一周して出口付近に行くと、樹齢六百年の叶杉と呼ばれる御神木があるのですが、この杉の小さな祠に向かって願い事をすると、叶うそう。日光に来た際は是非、日光東照宮の偉大さと歴史に触れて、エネルギーチャージをしにいってみてはいかがですか？
