THE DESIGN – SENSE OF PLACE

“Sense of place” is something that is vital to Mandarin Oriental hotel’s design concept.
 Sense of place, or Spirit of place..  is how we feel or powerful emotion that is stimulated or imbibed from the essence of the place.

マンダリン オリエンタルのホテルづくりの根底には、「センス・オブ・プレイス（SENSE OF PLACE）＝その土地の歴史や伝統、文化を取り入れる」という素敵な理念があります。

Mandarin Oriental achieves this by retaining its connection to the city’s past. In Mandarin Oriental Tokyo’s case, the hotel embodies historical aspects of the Nihonbashi area as well as respect and appreciation Japanese people have traditionally paid to the natural world of Japan - the mountainous, heavily forested and run through with many rivers. “Woods and Water” therefore form the underlying design ethos of Mandarin Oriental, Tokyo.

日本橋の持つ歴史や伝統を重んじながら、日本の自然を表したデザインコンセプト「森と水」を描くという発想から、ホテルのあらゆる個所に、天然の素材が使用されています。

The hotel symbolizes a single large living tree, providing shelter, comfort and a gathering place for the community. The entrance on the ground floor acts as the base of the tree with falling sheets of water nearby which recalls waterfalls that cascade from the mountains to nourish the tree roots.

「自然を旅するホテル」をコンセプトに持つマンダリン オリエンタル 東京は、「大木」に例えられていて、ホテルメインエントランスは木の根元であり、車寄せのそばにある水のディスプレイは、木の根元に流れ込む水を表現している。

The Lobby on 38th floor

As you reach the 38th floor lobby area, a serene interior-scape welcomes you. Surrounded by large windows and natural sunlight, it is as though you are floating up high in the sky. The lobby on the top floor reflects the ‘canopy’ of the tree – evokes an image of treetop branches and leaves, with fabrics, carpets and floors, suggesting leaves and branches and creates subtle sensation that one is standing in the middle of a forest.

木のいちばん上にあたる上層階のロビーには、大きな窓が広がり、自然な太陽の光を感じられる場所。レセプションエリアは、木の上の部分の枝や葉をイメージし、葉の形をモチーフにしたファブリックやカーペットに囲まれ、まるで森の中にいるような感覚でチェックイン・アウトができます。

The overall design reflects traditional Japanese aesthetic values such as the importance of understatement and reserve. This is evident through natural materials that express the cultural traditions of Japan in color, pattern and texture, produced by Textile designer Reiko Sudo.

マンダリンオリエンタル東京のインテリアデザインは須藤 玲子 氏が手掛けており、「ものの美しさ」や「つつましやかで謙虚であること」といった、控えめな日本文化を反映する精神的な要素を取り入れたデザイン。

Mandarin Grand Room

From the top-floor lobby, guests descend by local elevator to the guest rooms below - the experience of a journey through nature continues. With sweeping city/mountain views framed within the floor-to-ceiling windows, these beautiful rooms welcome you with a warm feeling with a backdrop of contemporary ‘Wa (Japanese)’ design. From the dark purple shades, to the texture of furniture and beautifully crafted fabrics and art - all beholds the hotel’s unique design concept which is ‘woods and water’, whilst the spaciousness offers a sense of sophisticated calm.

One of the signature treatment is Totally Tokyo - ‘Five’ Journeys from Nihonbashi. 
Treatment starts with a foot ritual followed by yuzu and rice feet exfoliation.
 It is an ultimate cleansing and warming experience which also includes a full body shiatsu style massage and stretching featuring head massage.

歴史ある日本橋で、日本ならではの癒しの成分を取り入れた、シグネチャートリートメントの「トータリートーキョー 日本橋から5の旅へ」は、「ザ・スパ・アット・マンダリン・オリエンタル・東京」　ならではのトリートメントです。フットリチュアル（足浴）で心を落ち着かせた後、深い呼吸と共に、米とゆずのスクラブで足元のケアが行われます。その後、米ぬかで身体を芯から温めながら、指圧スタイルの手技とストレッチで全身をリラックシングステートへと導いてくれます。

SENSE OF PLACE – NIHONBASHI

Mandarin Oriental, Tokyo exists high above the city in Nihonbashi - an old downtown center of Edo-Tokyo, rich in heritage.Nihonbashi translated as ‘Japan Bridge’ is an iconic bridge which is also a landmark of Tokyo and is the name of the suburb today.The original bridge was built in 1603 by a famous warrior and politician Tokugawa Ieyasu, who started the Tokugawa Shogunate and ruled the entire country for over 260 years. The construction of the bridge was a part of Tokugawa’s plan to develop a main transportation system throughout Japan and many shops settled in this area are lining the streets and shipping canals. These shops still exist around Nihonbashi, though they are difficult to be spotted as the façades has transformed over time. Guests are handed this nice-looking handy map which illustrates some of the main historical landmarks around Nihonbashi area, such as the Fukutoku Shrine, Mitsukoshi Department Store and Japan Bank to name a few.
